Joonsoo Kim

University of California, Los Angeles

Class of 2021

  • Joonsoo's Bio

Hi! My name is Joonsoo Kim, and I have been a singles freestyle skater for 11 years. I am a 5-time U.S. National competitor, and a National medalist in Novice & Junior. I also dedicate my time to figure skating off the ice as Secretary of LAFSC, Collegiate and ICEMEN Ambassador for U.S. Figure Skating, and former co-president of the UCLA Figure Skating team.

I am passionate about Collegiate Skating because I love the community it fosters, especially in a sport that can easily feel isolating. There have been many times where I wanted to quit skating altogether, but my Collegiate Skating community helped me re-ignite my passion for the sport. I want to continue promoting Collegiate Skating programs and see other skaters experience what formerly felt so magical to me.

COLLEGIATE SKATING FAQs

  • Which schools have Collegiate Skating programs?

You can find a list of schools with Collegiate Skating programs here.

  • What's the difference between Collegiate & Intercollegiate Skating?

Collegiate Skating can refer to three disciplines offered for skaters to compete in college:

    • Intercollegiate Team Skating offers events in freestyle, solo dance, and team maneuvers. Skaters compete individually in their respective events to contribute to their school's overall team score.
    • Collegiate and Open Collegiate Synchronized Skating provides opportunities for schools with synchro teams to compete in Sectional and National competitions.
    • The U.S. Collegiate Championships is an annual qualifying event that offers freestyle events in intermediate through senior. Skaters compete individually, and do not need to be a part of an established collegiate team.

  • Can figure skating get me into college?

While very few schools directly recruit figure skating applicants, you can still make your college application stand out by talking about your experiences with figure skating in your essays! Click here for more information on how you can get started with your college application.

  • Is Collegiate Skating expensive?

Team dues and general training expenses will vary significantly, depending on the school you choose to attend. You can expect the following expenses as a collegiate skater:

    • Annual team and/or club sports dues
    • U.S. Figure Skating membership
    • Training expenses
    • Competition & travel expenses
    • Equipment & blade sharpening

LAFSC offers a discounted Collegiate Membership, at $100 over the span of 4 years. In addition, many teams save on competition expenses by traveling as a team, as well as by offering reimbursements through fundraising.

We recommend you reach out to your specific school's Collegiate Skating program to learn more about expenses and reimbursements!

  • Can I get funding for Collegiate Skating?

There are several routes to earn funding for Collegiate Skating:

    1. U.S. Figure Skating offers several scholarship opportunities throughout the year for skaters demonstrating excellence on and off-the ice. Click here for more information!
    2. Many teams provide funding either through their school, or via fundraising efforts throughout the year.
    3. For junior and senior freestyle competitors, there are annual scholarship opportunities for medalists at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.
