Getting Into College
The Los Angeles Figure Skating Club is incredibly lucky to have Hayley and Miranda Young share some of their guidance on how figure skaters can leverage their sport on their college applications! Below are some tips to get started.
Hayley and Miranda are both Harvard and Duke alumni, and have helped countless students achieve their academic and college admissions goals. For more in-depth, professional tutoring and guidance, visit their website at https://www.delta2edu.com!
Do not expect the application reader to know anything about skating. It is up to you to explain it to them!
Avoid using acronyms like USFS and MITF, and write out the actual name instead.
Take the time to articulate what you have achieved. For example, if you have earned a Gold Medal, what does that mean? Let them know what a significant accomplishment this is. Include details like explaining what the test structure is, what discipline(s), amount of total hours spent, etc.
For training, it is private lessons, group lessons, off ice training, musical interpretation, etc.
It is also leadership (Junior Council, coaching), volunteering (competitions, committees), and community (club membership, family involvement, giving back to the sport). Don't miss out on an opportunity to highlight how multi-faceted our skating careers can be.
And what did you gain out of these travel experiences?
Number of competitions, hours of volunteering, hours of on-ice time, off-ice time, etc.
Ideally done as you go; you can include links to competitions, program videos, names of songs, highest scores, distinctions earned, time commitments, locations, amount of participants, or anything that stood out to you during your skating career
Are you a freestyle skater, ice dancer, theater on ice skater, or synchronized skater? Do you mostly participate in competitions, shows, or tests? Try to convey what skating means to you and why you do what you do. The goal is to show that you're interesting; you are working towards goals, are multi-faceted, you participate and challenge yourself, and you are passionate and dedicated!
